Bikinis were invented by Louis Reard and Jacques Heim, of Paris, in 1946. However, because they were so light, few had the courage to wear bikinis until the late 1950s, when actress Brigitte Bardot caused a stir. while wearing a bikini in the movie, "And God Created Woman." The bikini revolution then became all the rage, and even got her own song: "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini."
Back in the present, bikini has become modest. Crotch bikinis offer more coverage than before without sacrificing their sex appeal. Last season, the straight bottom and high waist bikini was born. Surprisingly, there were hardly any bikinis, trousers, or cutouts in sight. With more coverage in style, fashion houses are anticipating the "skirtini" to be the next big thing in the swimwear industry.
Bikinis come in a variety of styles, the most popular being the "Tankini" (longer shirt that exposes only a small part of the stomach), "Bandini" (hooded bikini), 'Camikini' (similar to a shirt) tankini except the top looks like a camisole) and 'Boy Legs' (the bottom is longer and looks like shorts). However, the classic two-piece is still in vogue, although the 'Bandini' was the most trending bikini style last season, with almost every swimwear brand producing their own version. For tie ties, belts, instead of spaghetti straps, are required.
For heavier people, sarongs continue to be a flattering way to hide extra pounds, although swim shorts are an alternative athletic option.
